Different Styles of Refrigerators and Freezers

Refrigerators available on sale

There is a style of refrigerator or freezer to fit most every budget, space and need. And thanks to today’s technology, you can bank on the fact they’ll be energy efficient. Selecting the right style involves several considerations, including the size of your opening, the available space for a door swing, and even the size of your kitchen entrance. After all, there’s no sense buying something you can’t get in the door! Once you’ve done some homework, you’re ready to start shopping from the list of styles below.

French Door Refrigerator

A French Door refrigerator has two side-by-side doors plus a bottom freezer drawer. They lend a more modern look to your kitchen while providing space efficiencies owing to the side-by-side doors that require half the space of a full-sized door. Energy savings are built-in considering that opening one door at a time retains cool air in the refrigerator.

Side-by-Side Refrigerator

Side-by-side models offer a more slim style because the refrigerator and freezer are both vertically placed next to each other. That means the doors are half the width of standard doors so they’re great for areas with nominal door clearance. The downside of the door size is that internal space is more limited and doesn’t provide room for larger items. Typically this refrigerator model is budget-friendly but lacks the energy efficiency of some other models.

4 Door Refrigerators

A variation of a French Door refrigerator, 4-door refrigerators are a great choice for large families because of their storage capacity. The top section features two doors that open outward and two freezers drawers that open horizontally. The refrigerator section on top makes them user-friendly as food access is eye level and easier to find without bending over. Just keep in mind, a 4-door refrigerator will be wide; so, measure carefully.

5 Door Refrigerators

Similar to a 4 door refrigerator, this style will have two French doors situated at the top with three drawers underneath. There will be a larger freezer compartment at the bottom with two drawers between that freezer and the refrigerator section. This style cuts down on the refrigerator space at the top but offers easy access to items stored in the drawers.

Upright Freezers

This freezer style offers greater convenience than a chest freezer, though it is more costly. Its refrigerator styling makes an upright freezer easier to access and organize vs. often digging through a chest freezer to find what you’re looking for. Upright freezers have auto defrosting to make them easier to maintain and clean.

Chest Freezers

Chest freezers are economical and come in a multitude of sizes, some more than 40 cubic feet of space. They have a hinged lid that opens upward, hence the name. Headroom is required because the lid does open upward. These freezers lack a fan causing inconsistencies in the temperature. Because they can be on the large side, they’re typically placed in garages, basements or utility rooms.

Top Freezer Refrigerators

If cost is a consideration, top freezer refrigerators are hands-down the most affordable. As you’d expect the freezer is positioned at the top with the refrigerator compartment underneath. So if you’re not keen on bending over to access the refrigerator, you might want to look at another style. They offer the best storage to size ratio of all styles.

Common Fridge Features

Here’s where you can drive up your costs quickly. So take a look at your budget and determine what you can and can’t live without.

Ice Maker

Having an ice maker built into your kitchen appliance is a great addition to your home, but you’ll need a water line available. Apart from that, ice makers have become pretty standard, so adding one won’t break the bank.

Water Dispenser

No question having a water dispenser is terribly convenient if you use it. If looks are important to you, they do present opening in the front that can deflect from aesthetics.

Smart Fridge

If you’re looking for bells and whistles and added costs, a smart fridge will do the trick. Because it’s connected to the cloud, it can let you see what’s inside, send/receive messages, view calendar entries, and alert you if the door is left open. This style has just hit the market.

Quick Access Door

A quick-access door is intended to provide convenience when accessing items like drinks and condiments. Basically, it’s just an extra door on the front of the refrigerator that opens to reveal the in-door shelves.
